Robin Paul Weijers (born May 4, 1964 ) is the Dutch founder and organizer of Domino Day, which was held annually up to and including 2009 .

Career

Beginning

When the Dutch airline KLM came up with the concept of showing films about world records with dominoes on board its flying machines in the mid-1980s , Robin Paul Weijers was part of the production and execution team. At the time he was a student at the Delft Technical University . Since then, he has never lost his enthusiasm for the chain reaction that can be generated with dominoes.

The first attempt to drop all the stones of a large domino snake was made by Weijers in 1986 in the Lisser flower hall ( Keukenhof ). However, it largely failed because the floor of the hall was not level enough and small animals caused damage. Nevertheless, over 700,000 stones fell, a new world record; the spectacle was first televised.

Since the first world record for small stones was set in 1998 , the event has been televised annually in up to 14 nations. The continuously increasing record of fallen stones is, after initially around 1.6 million in the first edition, now at 4,491,863 pieces (set on November 13, 2009). Only in 2007 was no new world record achieved. The program was always broadcast live, mostly from the Friesland halls in Leeuwarden . Weijers founded the "Weijers Domino Productions" based in Woerden , which was engaged in the further development of techniques for Domino Day throughout the year .

For it was casting it around 90 young people from every year Europe that should he assist in building up the stones. The Queen's commissioner, Ed Nijpels , even came to greet them . In addition, 128 million euros were approved (as of 2006) to build a new hall for the coming years, which should be in Leeuwarden .
