Roderik de Man

Roderik de Man (born May 23, 1941 in Bandung , Java , now Indonesia ) is a Dutch composer .

Life

De Man studied drums with Frans van der Kraan . At the Royal Conservatory of The Hague , he studied music theory, composition with Kees van Baaren and electronic music with Dick Raaijmakers . He has been teaching music theory and composition here since 1972.

Between 1993 and 1997 he was a member of the board of directors of the Genootschap van Nederlandse Componisten , since 1998 he has been active at the Centrum Electronische Muziek and the Nederlands Electroacoustisch Repertoire Center , and since 2003 at the Stichting Gaudeamus .

His works have been selected several times by the International Society for Contemporary Music for performances at the World Music Days (Oslo 1991, Mexico 1993, Seoul 1997 and Bucharest 1998). In 1992 he received second prize at the Festival de Musique Electroacoustique in Bourges for his composition Chordis Canam , and in 1999 second prize at the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione "Città di Torino 2000" for Air to Air .

He has received composition commissions from the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble , the Arnhemse Vereniging voor Kamermuziek , the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet , the Orkest De Volharding , the Osiris Trio and the Slagwerkgroep Den Haag . He wrote works for the pianists Jan van Dijk , René Eckhardt and Ananda Sukarlan and the singer Sigurður Guðmundsson . He mainly composes works for chamber music, often using electronic instruments and tape.
