Kees van Baaren

Kees Cornelis L. van Baaren (born October 22, 1906 in Enschede , † September 2, 1970 in Oegstgeest ) was a Dutch composer and music teacher .

Life

As the son of a music dealer, van Baaren played the piano , cello and harmonica at an early age . From 1924 to 1929 he studied piano with Rudolf Maria Breithaupt and composition and music theory with Boris Blacher and Friedrich Ernst Koch at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin . He also performed as a jazz and cabaret pianist. After returning to the Netherlands , he received lessons from Willem Pijper . From 1948 he was director of the Music Lycéum in Amsterdam , in 1953 he moved to the Utrecht Conservatory. In 1958 he was appointed director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and worked there until 1970; there he taught a young generation of Dutch composers (including Louis Andriessen , Theo Bruins , Misha Mengelberg , Reinbert de Leeuw , Jan van Vlijmen , Peter Schat and Jan Wisse ). In 1969 he received the Sweelinck Prize for his complete works.
