Rodolfo Cerrón Palomino (* 1940 in Huancayo , Peru ) is a Peruvian linguist who made decisive contributions to the research and development of Quechua .

Life

In addition to the Wanka Quechua of his region of origin, he speaks other variants of Quechua. He studied from 1960 to 1965 at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima , where he also received his doctorate in 1973.

In addition to Quechua, his research also focused on Aymara and Mochica . On behalf of the Peruvian Ministry of Education, he was the first to compile a dictionary of Wanka Quechua, which was published in 1976. He was very committed to the preservation and further development of all regional variants of Quechua. In 1994 he published a dictionary of southern Quechua , in which he proposes a uniform spelling standard for all Quechua dialects of southern Peru, Bolivia and Argentina . This standard is now accepted by many institutions in Peru and is officially used for Quechua in Bolivia.

In 1998 Cerrón became a lecturer at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima.

At the beginning of 2016, at a lecture in Puno , Cerrón was extremely pessimistic about the future of the indigenous languages of the Andean region. He described the intercultural bilingual education in Peru and neighboring countries as a "farce" and predicted the extinction of Quechua and Aymara with the next generation within the next forty years, although there would be no remedy due to the very strong social processes. These predictions are in line with his statements about the disappearance of the Wanka Quechua in the Mantaro Valley in the 20th century, as he describes it in 1989 in Lengua y sociedad en el Valle del Mantaro (see also section Yalpatrakuy / Testimonio there ). It sparked some anger and disagreement from linguists in Peruvian education who work for intercultural bilingual education.
