Rodrigo y Gabriela is a Mexican guitar duo . Her album Rodrigo y Gabriela immediately reached number 1 in the charts in her adopted country of Ireland as the first instrumental album ever . Their acoustic guitars they also set percussive a virtuoso.
history
Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero used to play together in the thrash metal band Tierra Acida . Without being able to achieve great success, they moved to Ireland in the hope of better opportunities for young musicians. Here they played in pubs for a long time and developed their style in the process.
In 2002 they released their first album Re-Foc and in 2004 Live Manchester and Dublin . The breakthrough came in 2005 when they were discovered by Damien Rice and supported his tour as support act. Her third album, Rodrigo y Gabriela , was produced by John Leckie , who had previously enjoyed success as a producer with groups such as Radiohead and Muse . The album immediately made it to number one on the Irish charts. After the release in Ireland, the album was released internationally on March 13, 2006.
They gained international attention not least for their lavish cover versions of the hits Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin and Orion by Metallica .
In 2011 they worked with Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack of Pirates of the Caribbean - Stranger Tides . On January 20, 2011, they started writing and recording the music. The soundtrack was released on May 20, 2011 in German-speaking countries.
For the album Mettavolution they received a Grammy in 2020 in the category Best Contemporary Instrumental Album .
