Life

Raes studied law at the University of Ghent , where he became Doctor juris doctorate . He then worked in the insurance industry.

Raes has been politically active since 1955, first for the Volksunie party , later for the Vlaams Blok party and since its dissolution in November 2004 in response to the conviction by the Belgian Supreme Court of Appeal for the successor party Vlaams Belang .

From 1968 to 1971 Raes was a member of the Council of the Province of East Flanders and from 1991 to 1995 he sat in the Flemish Parliament . From 1995 to 2001 he sat for the Vlaams Blok in the Belgian Senate . Raes was vice chairman of the Vlaams Blok and until 2001 a member of the board of directors of Ghent University. He is still active in Lovendegem for the Vlaams Belang.

On February 26, 2001, the Dutch television station NCRV broadcast an interview with Raes as part of its Netwerk program . In it he expressed doubts about the Holocaust . Among other things, he said: "The persecution and deportation [of Jews] has been systematic. But whether it was planned that they should all perish during the war is another question." When asked "And the figure of 6.5 million deaths?" he replied: "That is constantly being questioned. (...) Many bad things have happened: with Jews, Gypsies, I hear, also with homosexuals, apparently. But whether the numbers are exactly the same is a completely different question. About that many have written and many different numbers are given. "

The following day, the Vlaams Blok distanced itself from the statements and declared Raes' resignation as deputy party chairman. On February 28, 2001, the rector of the University of Ghent, Jacques Willems , called for Raes to step down as a member of the administrative board of the university, to which he had been appointed by the Flemish parliament. Raes complied with this request on March 5, 2001 and at the same time withdrew from the Belgian Senate, of which he had been a member since 1995. On December 12, 2008, Raes was sentenced to four months probation for Holocaust denial. In addition, he has to pay damages in the amount of 1000 € to the organizations Centrum voor Gelijke Kansen en Racismebestrijding and Forum der Joodse Organisaties . Raes announced that he would appeal the verdict.
