Roger-Pol Droit

Roger-Pol Droit (* 1949 ) is a French journalist and philosopher .

As a student at the École normal supérieure Lettres et sciences humaines in Saint-Cloud (1969–73) Droit became an editor at the age of 23 for the daily newspaper Le Monde and has been a regular contributor to the present day, especially for Le Monde des Livres . From 1978 to 1989 he worked as a philosophy teacher, from 1986 to 1989 also as Directeur de programme at the Collège international de philosophie , since 1989 as a collaborator in various research projects at the CNRS . In 1998 he received his doctorate in philosophy from the Sorbonne , and in 2008 he was awarded his habilitation à diriger des recherches (qualification to lead research projects) at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales . Since 2005 he has been Directeur de séminaire at the Institut de Sciences Politiques in Paris. In addition, he is the creator of the Forum Le Monde-Le Mans , which from 1989 to 1995 brought together high-ranking debaters on a whole range of cultural-scientific topics and was documented in seven volumes. Since 2003 he has also worked for the daily Le Point . From 1994 to 1999 he acted as advisor to the Directeur général of UNESCO on philosophical questions, and since March 2008 he has been a member of the Comité National Consultatif d'Ethique pour les sciences de la vie .

His research relates to the representation of “the others ” as philosophers or non-philosophers in the imagination of occidental thinkers (“les représentations des autres, particulièrement en tant qu'ils sont considérés comme philosophes ou non-philosophes, dans l'imaginaire des penseurs occidentaux »). The starting point is the lack of reception of Buddhist thought in Western philosophy despite Schopenhauer and Nietzsche (“La découverte du bouddhisme et la philosophie européenne (1820–1890)”). This is followed by the second research project, the occidental representation of the barbarians («la représentation occidentale des barbaren»).

In addition, Droit has devoted himself to a variety of philosophical and journalistic topics and has written successful books for a wide audience.

For his services, Droit was promoted to Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in November 2004 .
