CODEN MOON

Le Monde ( French for "The World") is a French daily newspaper . Alongside Figaro , the national newspaper is considered tobe the most important opinion-forming newspaper in France. The political orientation of the paper is considered left-liberal . Le Monde is indirectly linked to the left-wing newspaper Le Monde diplomatique . The newspaper's sold circulation fell from 390,840 copies in 1999 to 302,624 copies in 2018, a decrease of 22.6 percent.

The sheet is considered to be the successor to the leading medium of the Third Republic , Le Temps (1861–1942), which was discontinued in France after the Second World War due to allegations of collaboration with the German occupying forces.

history

First edition, December 19, 1944

After the liberation of France (La Liberation) , General Charles de Gaulle wanted to publish a journalistically demanding daily newspaper with an international reputation. The daily newspaper Le Temps , which was closed by German authorities on November 30, 1942 , had this rank in the interwar period as the official daily of the Quai d'Orsay , the French foreign ministry. Because of the collaboration with the German occupying forces in World War II, the Le Temps editorial team lost its reputation. He commissioned his then information minister , Pierre-Henri Teitgen , to find an editor who had belonged to the Resistance and who had indubitable journalistic competence. Teitgen chose the Gaullist Hubert Beuve-Méry as editor , who had resigned from his position as foreign correspondent in Prague in 1938 in protest at the editorial approval for the Munich Agreement . The editorial building of Le Temps in the rue des Italiens was confiscated and its typography and format adopted. The first editorial committee also comprised the law professor René Courtin and de Gaulle's press officer at the time, Christian Funck-Brentano . The first edition of Le Monde appeared on December 19, 1944 .

owner

By June 2010, Le Monde was 53 percent owned by its employees and collaborators. Danone , bank BNP Paribas and billionaire François Pinault shared 47 percent . 2004 was the newspaper's worst year of losses. The La Vie-Le Monde publishing group was able to halve its deficit in 2005 from around 28 million euros in the 2006 financial year. The Paris armaments, aviation and media group Lagardère , among others, was interested in the newspaper .

On June 25, 2010, the editorial conference of the bidding group of PS- related entrepreneur Pierre Bergé , the banker Matthieu Pigasse (Vice-President of Lazard Europe) and the internet entrepreneur Xavier Niel (groupe Iliad , DSL provider Free ) awarded the contract for the purchase the economically troubled daily Le Monde . Bergé and his Compagnons guarantee the editorial staff their journalistic independence. Bergé not only guaranteed the editors their right of veto over the assignment of the editor-in-chief, but also set up a foundation with a contribution of ten million euros, which is to gradually acquire shares for the editors until a blocking minority of 33 percent is reached .

President Nicolas Sarkozy intervened several times and finally threatened the editorial team with a vote in favor of Bergé & Co. with the cancellation of the subsidies for the modernization of the Le Monde printing plant. Critics spoke of Sarkozy 's Berlusconization of France's media (the media entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi was Italy's long-term prime minister at the time). The supervisory board of the Le Monde group voted with the editorial majority in favor of the takeover offer of the group of investors around Bergé.

Daniel Křetínský has owned company shares since 2019 .

Head office

Since December 20, 2004, Le Monde has had its headquarters on Boulevard Auguste Blanqui in the 13th arrondissement ( south of Paris ). The glass facade is adorned with a drawing by Le Monde caricaturist Jean Plantureux ( Plantu ): A dove of peace with an olive branch in its beak and a quote from the French writer Victor Hugo . The former Air France building was roofed over by the architect Christian de Portzamparc , the room distribution and the collective workplaces were designed by his wife Élizabeth de Portzamparc.

In 2015 Le Monde decided to move to a new headquarters. The property is now back in the city center near the Gare d'Austerlitz in the 13th arrondissement . On January 15, 2015, a week after the attack on Charlie Hebdo , the design by the Norwegian-American architecture firm Snøhetta was selected as the future domicile by means of an architecture competition. The glass facade will consist of elements of varying transparency and have a pixel-like structure. One critic described the design as “end-time architecture” that was “surprisingly negative” (“doomsday architecture”, “surprisingly dystopian”). At the end of 2016, the start of construction for 2017 was announced.

The Le-Monde editor in chief Érik Izraelewicz died on 27 November 2012 at the age of 58 years after a dizzy spell. Natalie Nougayrède , who has been with Le Monde since 1996, was elected as her successor on March 1, 2013 . Nougayrède resigned in May 2014 after increasing criticism from the editorial staff about their “ erratic management style”. The current trigger for the resignations were plans for a restructuring of responsibilities, especially the transfer of more than 50 editors from print to online. The previous editor-in-chief of lemonde.fr , Jérôme Fenoglio, took over the management of the print as well as the online editorial department .
