Roger John Williams

Roger John Williams (born August 14, 1893 in Oatacamund , India , † February 20, 1988 in Austin ) was an American biochemist.

Life

Williams was born to missionaries in India, but returned to the United States when he was two and grew up in Kansas and California. In 1919 he received his doctorate magna cum laude from the University of Chicago . In 1920 he became an assistant professor at the University of Oregon , where he received a full professorship in 1928. In 1932 he became a professor at Oregon State College and in 1940 at the University of Texas at Austin . From 1971 to 1986 he was Professor Emeritus there. 1940 to 1963 he was the founding director of the Clayton Foundation Biochemical Institute (now the Biochemical Institute).

In 1938 he isolated the vitamin pantothenic acid , the existence of which he suspected since 1920 after investigations on yeast cells. In 1941 he isolated folic acid , which he named. After retiring, he wrote numerous books on nutrition.

Williams was a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1946 and was President of the American Chemical Society in 1957 . He received honorary degrees from Columbia University, Oregon State University, and the University of Redlands. In 1941 he received the Mead Johnson Award from the American Institute of Nutrition for his discovery of pantothenic acid, for which he also received the Chandler Medal from Columbia University.

In 1916 he married Hazel Elizabeth Wood, with whom he had three children, and after her death in 1952 Mabel Phyllis Hobson. He was the brother of the chemist Robert R. Williams .
