Roger Mpungu

Roger Mpungu (* 1924 in Muhwanya , Burundi ; † December 7, 2007 in Gasorwe, Muyinga Province , Burundi) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Muyinga from 1980 to 1994 .

Life

Roger Mpungu received on 12 April 1955, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He became involved in the 1970s after the coup of Ntare V. Ndizeye and Jean-Baptiste Bagaza for the persecuted Hutu and Tutsi ; He saved numerous people from death. Later he took care of traumatized priests. Mpungu became vicar general of the diocese of Gitega , especially for parts of Kirimiro. He was also a pastor in Mugera. After Pierre Buyoya's military coup in 1987, Roger Mpungu was the only remaining bishop in Burundi; he sought contact with the government in order to end the armed conflict.

In 1980 Pope John Paul II appointed him second bishop of the Muyinga diocese in the Muyinga province in the tri-border region of Burundi , Rwanda and Tanzania . He was ordained bishop on May 4, 1980 by Pope John Paul II himself as well as Cardinal Agnelo Rossi and Cardinal Joseph-Albert Malula .

In 1994 his resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II. He died of complications from cancer and was buried in Muyinga Cathedral.
