At the beginning of the 20th century, numerous settlers reached the Great Plains and thus New Mexico in order to develop new living space there. In 1906, clergyman Andrew J. Maxwell left his hometown of Rogers , Arkansas, and moved west. In 1908 he established a post office in what is now the settlement area and named it after his hometown. Maxwell died in 1929. The Rogers settlement was built around the post office that still exists today.

Archaeological excavations in the vicinity of Rogers have found fossils from the Lower Cretaceous period , especially from the Albium . Rock studies assign these finds to the so-called Kiamichi slate .

Rogers has been the site of several meteorites . For example, a chondrite weighing 982 grams was discovered in 1974 , and in 1989 a meteorite containing the mineral ringwoodite was found.
