Rogers Hall Stolen (born September 18, 1937 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American physicist who works in fiber optics.

He attended St. Olaf College with a bachelor's degree in 1959 and received his doctorate in 1965 from the University of California, Berkeley . As a post-doctoral student , he was employed at the University of Toronto from 1964 to 1966 and from 1966 at Bell Laboratories . He stayed there until 1998 when he became a professor at Virginia Tech . In 2012 he was visiting professor at Clemson University .

In 1973 he and Erich P. Ippen demonstrated Raman amplification in glass fibers (see optical amplifier ). This later (from the late 1980s) became important for the transmission of information with optical solitons in glass fibers over great distances. In the early 1980s he, James P. Gordon and Linn F. Mollenauer at Bell Labs succeeded in observing the propagation of optical solitons in glass fibers.

In 1990 he received the RW Wood Prize . He has been a member of the National Academy of Engineering since 2012 (for contributions to nonlinear optics and the invention of polarization-maintaining fiber). He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America .
