Linn F. Mollenauer

Linn Frederick Mollenauer (born January 6, 1937 in Washington , Pennsylvania ) is an American physicist who deals with quantum optics .

life and work

Mollenauer received his bachelor's degree in physics engineering from Cornell University in 1959 and his PhD in physics from Stanford University in 1965 . From 1965 to 1972 he was Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley . From 1972 he was at Bell Laboratories (Bell Labs) in Holmdel, where he is now part of the Lightwave Systems Research department .

Mollenauer is known for investigating optical solitons and their propagation in glass fibers and via non-linear optics in glass fibers. In the early 1980s he, James P. Gordon and Rogers H. Stolen at Bell Labs succeeded in observing the propagation of optical solitons in glass fibers. Since the practical application lagged behind the laboratory observations, there was even a risk from the research director of Bell Labs ( Arno Penzias ) that the research would be stopped altogether. A breakthrough in 1987 was the development (at the University of Southampton and Bell Labs) of the erbium - doped glass fiber amplifier (EDFA, see Optical Amplifier ), which replaced the cumbersome use of electronic amplifiers. Using another method, the von Mollenauer group achieved communication with optical solitons in glass fibers over 4000 km using Raman amplification in 1988. This was the first demonstration of long distance communication using optical solitons.

Mollenauer is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America , the IEEE , the American Physical Society , the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Engineering (1993).

In 2001 he received the Quantum Electronics Award from the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, in 1982 he received the RW Wood Prize for the development of the color center laser , in 1986 the Ballantine Medal from the Franklin Institute and in 1997 the Charles Hard Townes Award . In 1996 he was a Loeb Lecturer at Harvard University . He also received the Bell Laboratories Distinguished Technical Staff Award in 1982 and is a Fellow of Bell Labs.
