He was chairman of the Society for Physical and Mathematical Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and from 1970 to 2000 full professor and long-time dean at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1953, Glaser, the son of an engineer, began studying biology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena , which he graduated with a diploma in 1958. In 1961 he received his doctorate from Manfred Gersch with investigations into radiological water pollution.

From 1958 to 1965 Glaser was a research assistant - until 1961 in the Office for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Technology , then at the Institute for Medicine and Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin-Buch .

In 1965 Glaser completed his habilitation at the University of Jena and was a lecturer in zoology there for five years . In 1970 he was appointed full professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin, where he taught for the next 30 years. In 1990 he became dean of the mathematics and science faculty. In 2000 he retired. Until 2012 he published other scientific papers.

From 1979 to the end of the GDR, Glaser was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and from 1981 to 1990 chairman of the Society for Physical and Mathematical Biology. From 1976 to 1988 he was a member of the European Committee on Biophysics at UNESCO .

Glaser lives in Berlin.

Glaser is one of the first representatives of modern biophysical research and was instrumental in establishing it in university teaching in the GDR. For many years he was co-editor of the internationally renowned journals studia biophysica and Biologische Rundschau . His text Introduction to Biophysics from 1971 became a standard work and he himself updated it several times. In 2012 a revised new edition appeared in New York .
