Roland Mittermeir

Roland Mittermeir (born June 6, 1950 in Vienna ; † June 19, 2014 ) was an Austrian computer scientist .

Life

Mittermeir completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk and came into contact with IT at the Wiener Stadtwerke salary . He made the Externistenreifeprüfung maturation and then studied the then new computer science at the Technical University of Vienna and at the University of World Trade (now the Vienna University of Economics) business . In 1978 he received his doctorate on the subject of performance determinants in research units, and in 1982 Mittermeir completed his habilitation in applied computer science at the Vienna University of Technology. In 1984 he was appointed full professor at the University of Klagenfurt, where he held various management positions until his retirement in October 2012.

From 1984 Mittermeir played a leading role in setting up the computer science institute at the University of Klagenfurt , which by 2014 had grown to three institutes and nine professors. Roland Mittermeir did important development work in the applied business administration and computer science studies. Mittermeir's professional focus lay in the areas of requirements engineering , design of application systems, language design and system development methodology. Until October 1, 1991 he was the director of the institute.

Mittermeir played a key role in the introduction of the then newly created teacher training course for computer science and computer science management at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt in 2000 , and was then the patron of this subject. In his institute he set up a group for the subject didactics of informatics, which ultimately led to an independent institute for informatics didactics, which he primarily promoted within the university.

Mittermeir was also significantly involved in the establishment of the regional specialist didactics center for computer science in Carinthia, where he was also very much involved as scientific director in the IMST thematic program "teaching computer science creatively".

In 2006 Roland Mittermeir was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class . In 2011 he received the ETH Zurich Medal of Honor “for outstanding contributions to school IT”.
