Roland Paetzold (born July 13, 1931 in Ober-Großhartmannsdorf , Silesia ; † July 1982 in the Giant Mountains ) was a German chemist.

Paetzold studied chemistry at the TU Dresden , where he received his doctorate in 1958 under Arthur Simon . His dissertation dealt with investigations on selenious acid , its salts and esters with Raman and infrared spectroscopy . In 1963 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on selenium-oxygen compounds. Subsequently, he was appointed professor at the University of Jena and from 1965 professor for analytical and inorganic chemistry. His predecessors there were Franz Hein and Lothar Kolditz . In 1967 he became head of the chemistry department and in 1968 head of the newly created chemistry section. He was considered an excellent academic teacher. In 1982 he committed suicide.

Until 1970 he dealt with the chemistry of selenium , the compounds of which he investigated using various molecular spectroscopic methods. He then built up photochemistry in Jena, where he worked alongside basic research with the VEB Photochemical Combine Wolfen.

In 1970 he became a member of the Leopoldina and in 1977 of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .
