Little Roland

The Kleiner Roland monument , also known as the Roland Fountain , is located in the Neustadt district of Bremen , at the southern end of the Neuer Markt . It is included in the list of monuments and statues of the city of Bremen .

The fountain column was probably built in 1737 in the workshop of the sculptor Theophilus Wilhelm Frese . It consists of Obernkirchen sandstone , also often called Bremer Stein because of its frequent use in Bremen. The fountain base is decorated with a particularly beautiful ornamentation . From the workshop of Frese, Bremen's most famous baroque sculptor , come from Bremen a. a. the facade decoration from 1755 on the house of the Stadtsparkasse (Markt 12), a sarcophagus and an epitaph in the Bremen Cathedral and other works in the Focke Museum .

The Bremen Roland from 1404 on the Bremen market square is the symbol of civil rights and freedoms for the people of Bremen. The Neustadt in the south of Bremen was not built until the 17th century after the expansion of the city fortifications . The citizens of Neustadt, with trades that were not tied to a guild such as shoemakers or cigar makers, had only very limited citizenship since 1642. So they confidently set up their own Roland. The figure was donated in 1737 by the 1st Neustadt Citizens Company and set up as a decoration for the public fountain in the horse walk on Osterstraße in the Alte Neustadt. It was created after the model of Roland in the old town but called "Little Roland" because of its modest dimensions. “You have the big ones standing there, we put the little ones there. We are not the big city, we are the little one and the appendage, but we are just as much a city as you are, ”the city lords of Neustadt are supposed to have said at the time. It bears the inscription:

“Then stand still Ruhlandsbild
Stand firm and unshaken
Under your Kayser's shield
Let the envy be bitter
Be kind to God and Karol
Shine your luck and blessing gold
Until this whole round splintered.
First Company Lieutenant
Hinrich Worninhhusen
Anno 1737 "

In 1899 the Roland fountain was moved to the north end of the Neuer Markt and in 1965 to its south end, in front of the new St. Pauli Church . It is a listed building.
