Rolf Escher (born September 4, 1936 in Hagen / Westphalia) is a German graphic artist .

Live and act

Escher studied German at the University of Cologne from 1956 to 1962 and painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In 1965 he moved to Essen, where he had the first graphics printed in the Steidle press. Since the end of the 1960s, he has dealt exclusively with graphics, mainly with drypoint and line etching . In 1968 he set up his own printing workshop and in 1976 received a professorship at the Münster University of Applied Sciences . In the same year he was awarded the Medal of Honor at the 4th International Graphic Triennial in Frechen. In 1988 he received the prize of the 5th International Portrait Biennial in Tuzla.

Escher has been traveling to Italy annually since 1980 and visited various libraries in Europe between 1990 and 2004. The cycle Book Times - Drawn Discoveries arose from these visits . Escher also deals with graphic sequences for literary works such as Franz Kafka's story The Metamorphosis or Thomas Mann's The Railway Accident .

After his first major exhibition in 1973 in the Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum in Hagen, other exhibitions followed, for example in the Museum Folkwang Essen (1979, 1994, 2007) and in the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum Hildesheim (1986) as well as exhibitions in libraries such as the Duke August Library in Wolfenbüttel (2001), the State and University Library Göttingen (2002) and the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe (2002).

Rolf Escher is a member of the German Association of Artists . He lives in Essen and Berlin.
