Rolf Looser

Rolf Looser (born May 3, 1920 in Niederscherli ; † January 10, 2001 in Zurich ) was a Swiss cellist and composer .

Life

After graduating from the municipal high school in Bern in 1939, he studied music at the Bern Conservatory and the University of Bern . Richard Sturzenegger (violoncello) and Albert Moeschinger , Max Zulauf and Ernst Kurth (music theory) were among his teachers . He obtained his diploma in 1944. From 1944 to 1946 he studied composition with Frank Martin in Geneva and counterpoint with Willy Burkhard in Zurich. This was followed by studies in cello with Franz Walter in Geneva and Pierre Fournier in Paris.

From 1946 he was principal cellist with the Monte Ceneri Radio Orchestra and later with the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra under Willem van Otterloo . After 1949 he worked as a freelancer in Paris. From 1952 to 1975 he taught the cello at the Bern and Biel Conservatoires and from 1975 at the Zurich University of Music .
