Albert Moeschinger (born January 10, 1897 in Basel , † September 25, 1985 in Thun ) was a Swiss composer.

Live and act

Albert Moeschinger, son of a businessman, completed his musical studies in Bern , Leipzig (composition with Paul Graener , piano with Robert Teichmüller) and Munich (composition with Walter Courvoisier ). After several seasons as an ensemble pianist in cafés, Moeschinger settled in Bern, where he taught privately as a piano and theory teacher, and from 1937 also at the conservatory , where he resumed his compositional activity.

In 1943 health problems prompted him to settle in the Valais mountain village of Saas Fee . Since then he has devoted himself exclusively to composition. Reading Thomas Mann's musician novel «Dr. Faustus »and the subsequent correspondence with the writer in 1948 encouraged him to incorporate the twelve-tone technique into his work. After 1956 Moeschinger lived mainly in Ascona . He spent his old age in Thun, where he died on September 25, 1985.

Moeschinger's oeuvre, which takes into account all genres except opera, comprises over 400 titles. He received the following honors: 1952 the Art Prize of the City of Basel , 1957 the Composition Prize of the Swiss Tonkünstlerverein and 1981 the Music Prize of the Canton of Bern. His estate is in the Basel University Library .

Church music traces of Moeschinger can be found in the hymn book of the Evangelical Reformed of Switzerland: RG 215 Lord we wait poor and hungry (same melody also 318, 553 and 717) and 256 A word has been received .
