Rolf Nobel (* 1950 in Hamburg ) is a German photographer , photojournalist, communication designer , university professor and lithographer . He became known in the 1980s and 1990s through photo reports in German magazines such as Geo , Mare and Stern . From 2000 to 2016 Nobel taught as a university professor. In 2016 he was awarded the Dr. Erich Salomon Prize .

Life

Rolf Nobel completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer and worked in this profession for some time. From 1977 to 1983 he studied communication design at the University of Fine Arts with a focus on photography in Hamburg. He graduated in 1983 with a diploma.

Since 1979 he has been working as a freelance photojournalist for various German magazines. In 1990 Nobel joined the photo agency Visum in Hamburg and soon after became a co-owner. After a brief move to the image | trust agency , he returned to Visum.

In 1997 and 1998 he accepted teaching positions for photo journalism at the Muthesius Art College in Kiel. In 2000 he took up a professorship at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences . A short time later he took over a professorship for photography at the University of Hanover . In June 2016 he received the Dr. Erich Salomon Prize from the German Society for Photography, one of the most important German photography awards. "Following the tradition of Otto Steinert, Rolf Nobel has made German university education in photojournalism a trademark and thus also helped to gain a new international perception," says the reasoning. He has been retired since September 2016.

Since the end of 2010, the course at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences has been accredited as the first bachelor's degree in photojournalism and documentary photography in Germany.

Rolf Nobel is the founder of the Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism , which takes place every 2 years in Hanover and which the Hanover University of Applied Sciences organizes together with the Association for the Promotion of Photography in Hanover and in cooperation with Freelens .

Rolf Nobel is an appointed member of the German Society for Photography (DGPh).
