Rolf Wetzel

Rolf Wetzel (born January 5, 1921 in Chemnitz ) is a former German politician ( SED ) and President of the German Central Bank of the GDR .

Life

Wetzel graduated after attending the elementary school an apprenticeship as an insurance salesman. He joined the NSDAP when the war broke out on September 1, 1939 . After 1945 he became a member of the SED and graduated with a degree in economics. In 1950 he acted as the head of the Dresden Insurance Company , then as the head of the German Insurance Supervision Office and in 1952/1953 as the main director of the German Insurance Company of the GDR. From 1953 to 1957 he worked in the planning and finance department at the Central Committee of the SED . From 1957 to 1961 he was head of department in the Ministry of Finance and in 1961 deputy finance minister of the GDR. In November 1961 he succeeded the late Martin Schmidt as President of the German Central Bank. In October 1962 he rose to be a member of the GDR Council of Ministers . He was sworn in as minister on November 26, 1962. After the founding of the International Bank for Economic Cooperation of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid (Comecon) in October 1963, Wetzel was appointed to represent the GDR at the Comecon Bank in Moscow. After conflicts with the Ministry of Finance of the GDR , he was replaced as President of the German Central Bank and a member of the Council of Ministers in June 1964 and appointed General Director of the German Foreign Trade and Reinsurance AG of the GDR (DARAG) .
