Roman Yuswa

Roman Jossypowytsch Yuswa ( Ukrainian Роман Йосипович Юзва ; born November 7, 1934 in Chmelnyzkyj , Ukrainian SSR ; † November 14, 2003 in Ivano-Frankivsk , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian poet and journalist.

Life

Roman Jossypowytsch Juswa was born in the village of Hretschani ( Гречані ), today a district of the city of Khmelnytskyi. Jusawa's father was arrested by the NKVD in 1938 as an alleged member of an anti-Soviet insurgent organization in which he spied on behalf of a foreign state and sentenced to death on September 29, 1938 and shot. His mother was first evicted and then imprisoned for a year. After graduating with honors from high school in Shpola in Cherkassy Oblast , where his uncle lived, he began studying at the Mining Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute in Kiev , which he graduated in 1958. He then worked in a salt mine in the Transcarpathian village of Solotvyno .

From 1961 he worked at the Metallurgical Combine and then at the Design and Technology Institute in Ivano-Frankivsk. Since 1967 he worked as a journalist in Ivano-Frankivsk, wrote poetic works and journalistic articles.

Yuswa was a member of the National Association of Writers of Ukraine and a member of the National Association of Journalists of Ukraine. Roman Yuswa was among the first to fight for Ukraine's independence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He left an enormous poetic legacy and many of his poems were set to music. His poetry and his public position were marked by a high level of civic awareness and the manifestation of patriotic sentiments. In 1977 he won the Myroslaw Irtschan Prize for Literature and Art, and in 2005 he was posthumously awarded the Ivano-Frankivsk City Prize for the book At the Crossroads of Fate .
