Romsø is since 1996 uninhabited Danish island in the Great Belt off the east coast of Hindsholm on Fyn ( dt. : Fyn ) at the northern entrance to Kerteminde Bay. The 108 hectare island belongs to the parish community ( Danish : Sogn ) Viby ( Viby Sogn ), which belonged to Harde Bjerge Herred in what was then Odense Amt until 1970 . After that it belonged to the Kerteminde municipality in what was then Fyns Amt , which was merged into the “new” Kerteminde municipality in the Syddanmark region with the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 . From 1869 to 1973 a lighthouse on the island showed seafarers the way into the bay.
The highest point on the island at 17 meters is Ravnsbjerg in the northwest.
Romsø was first mentioned in 1231 in King Waldemars Jordebog. In Erik Pontoppidan's Danish Atlas of about 1,760 a resident and a wildlife park called on the island. During the wars with England, the island was occupied by the English from 1807-1809, who felled large quantities of trees and burned several houses and farms. The devastation was too much for the islanders and in 1808 the last left the island. In 1809 the British were driven from the island by a hunter corps owned by Hans Rudolph Juel. 100 British prisoners were brought to Kerteminde. The remains of English graves can still be seen in the northeastern part of the island. The island was used for agriculture until 1961 and was inhabited by around 50 people. The remaining eight buildings are used as holiday homes.
