history

Historical view

The village was first mentioned in a document on November 1, 1254. The manor Romschütz emerged from a medieval water castle and was first mentioned in the 13th century. In the earliest times it belonged to a noble family from Pleißenland , who named themselves after the estate "von Romschütz" and had a cross in their coat of arms. After 1435 the estate was owned by the von Zschadras family for two hundred years . After the family died out, the estate temporarily became a princely chamber estate . The barons Bachoff von Echt had owned it since 1700 . The manor house was built in 1712. In 1846 the State Councilor Sonnenkalb acquired the estate. After this it was owned by Gustav Meinert from Oelsnitz, who died in 1882 and left it to his son Eugen.

Romschütz belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg , which was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies from the 16th century due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603), Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). When the Ernestine duchies were reorganized in 1826, the place came back to the duchy of Saxony-Altenburg. After the administrative reform in the duchy, it belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). From 1918 the village belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was added to the State of Thuringia in 1920. In 1922 it came to the district of Altenburg .

On July 1, 1950, Romschütz was incorporated into Göhren. During the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the existing states were dissolved and the districts were redesigned. Thus Romschütz came as the district of Goehren with the district Altenburg to the district of Leipzig , which since 1990 belonged to the district Altenburg Thuringia and opened in 1994 Altenburger in the district of the country. The former moated castle has been a listed building since 1960. In 1972 the castle was demolished and the (Waal) pond was leveled with the rubble. The farm buildings were preserved. The interior of the demolished Romschütz Castle was given to the pavilion of the Goethe Theater in Bad Lauchstädt . In 2012 150 people lived in the district.
