Romulus Gabor (born October 14, 1961 in Pui ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . He played a total of 304 games in the highest Romanian soccer league, Divizia A , and took part as a national player in the 1984 European Championship .

Player career

In 1976 Gabor moved to the youth of Corvinul Hunedoara . Two years later he came into the first team squad, which at that time in the first Romanian league, the Divizia A , played. In his first year he came on four missions and had to relegate to Divizia B at the end of the 1978/79 season . Under coach Mircea Lucescu , the direct rise was achieved. In the 1980/81 season he developed into a regular force in the storm. With third place at the end of the 1981/82 season and reaching the second round of the UEFA Cup , he was involved in Corvinul's greatest successes as a player. After the departure of coach Lucescu, he was unable to continue these successes with Corvinul and missed qualification for an international competition in the following years. The club often had to fight to stay in class until the end of the season. Gabor remained loyal to Corvinul until 1991 before he moved to Diósgyőri VTK in the Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnokság . After a year he returned to Hunedoara, which had meanwhile been relegated to Divizia B. There he succeeded with his club in the 1992/93 season only just about relegation. He moved to league competitor Unirea Alba Iulia , but already accepted an offer from first division side Universitatea Cluj during the winter break .

Gabor joined Corvinul Hunedoara again in 1994. In the 1994/95 season he got ten goals himself, the rise was clearly missed in second place with 14 points behind Politehnica Timișoara . In the following season , Gabor got less work. In 1996 he was hired by FC Inter Sibiu , who had just been relegated from Divizia A. Instead of playing for promotion, the club found itself at the bottom of the table. Gabor left Sibiu in the winter break of 1996/97 for third division club Viitorul Oradea, where he ended his career in 1997.

National team

Gabor played a total of 35 games for the Romanian national team . National coach Mircea Lucescu , who was also Gabor's club coach at Corvinul Hunedoara , appointed him for the first time in November 1981. In the World Cup qualifier against Switzerland he came to his first international match. In the following years he was an integral part of the team that successfully qualified for the 1984 European Championship in France. There he was used in the first group game against Spain and in the third group game against Portugal .

After the European Championship, the appointments became less frequent. In qualifying for the 1986 World Cup , he only made two appearances. At the beginning of 1986 he was in the squad for two friendlies against Egypt , where he was able to score his second goal in the national jersey to win 1-0 on March 2, 1986. On April 23 of the same year, he was used for the last time in the friendly against the Soviet Union .

Coaching career

In March 2012, Gabor became the head coach of Mureșul Deva in Liga II . At the end of the season he had to relegate his team. Then the ways parted again. In 2014 he was in charge of Corvinul Hunedoara for a few months .
