Ronald "Ron" Baensch (born June 5, 1930 in Melbourne ; † December 28, 2017 ) was an Australian track cyclist .

Cycling career

In 1960, Ron Baensch started in the sprint at the Olympic Games in Rome and finished fourth after losing third place to Italian Valentino Gasparella in the final. Also in 1960 he was Australian sprint champion. Baensch moved to Great Britain with his brother Kevin and Brian Dew after the 1960 Olympics. The group expected better start and training opportunities. As a result, the driver was no longer nominated by the Australian Association for the Commenwealth Games .

In 1961, Baensch took third place in the amateur sprint at the World Railroad Championships in Zurich. In 1964 he became a professional. At the World Track Championships in Paris in the same year he was runner-up in the professional sprint, in 1965 he was third and in 1966 again second.

In 1965, Ron Baensch took third place in the renowned sprint classic Grand Prix de Paris . He also started in 46 six-day races and finished third three times. In 1970 he tried again as a sprinter, he entered the UCI track world championships , but remained unsuccessful after a disqualification.

At the rail world championships in 1967 , Baensch was tested positive for ephedrine , disqualified and fined. He said he was taking a cold medicine.
