Ron Carey (trade unionist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ron Carey (born March 22, 1936 in New York City , † December 12, 2008 ibid) was an American trade unionist and from 1991 to 1999 President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters .

Ron Carey was the first President of the Teamsters, who was elected by its members by secret ballot in 1991. He was also re-elected in 1996, although he had to face James P. Hoffa - the son of Jimmy Hoffa .

Considered a candidate for hope who would break the inglorious chain of his predecessors, he led the union on a successful 15-day strike against UPS in 1997 .

But even Ron Carey was overtaken by the judiciary: Due to disagreements (“ Teamstergate ”) Carey had to resign from his office and was not allowed to participate in the new election; the allegations related to union funds apparently used for his election campaign.

Similar allegations were also in the room against his successor James P. Hoffa, who took office on March 19, 1999, but these allegations were obviously classified as less relevant.

Ron Carey had always protested that he did not know what was going on and was acquitted on October 12, 2001.
