Ronald Adrian Nirenberg (born April 11, 1977 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . He has been Mayor of the city of San Antonio , Texas, since June 21, 2017 . Ron Nirenberg is non-party .

Life

Ron Nirenberg is the son of an Ashkenazi Jew and a Filipino mother. He is also has Russian, Polish, Scottish and Indian ancestors. Nirenberg himself is a Methodist . He grew up in Austin, Texas and studied communications at Trinity University and the University of Pennsylvania , where he received his master's degree. He then worked as a program director at the Annenberg Public Policy Center in Philadelphia. Ron Nirenberg is married and has one son.

Since July 2013, Ron Nirenberg was a member of the San Antonio City Council. On December 10, 2016, he announced that he would run against Ivy Taylor in the mayoral election the following year . In the first ballot, Nirenberg got 37.1 percent of the vote and was still behind Taylor, but since she too could not achieve the required majority, there was a runoff election on June 10, 2017 , in which Nirenberg won 54.6 percent who prevailed voices. Ron Nirenberg is considered a progressive politician. As a city council member, he supported a lawsuit in June 2017 against a law passed by Governor Greg Abbott making it a criminal offense for local officials not to support American border guards against combating immigration to the United States.

Nirenberg's political program includes the fight against crime, a better airport infrastructure and the creation of living space. After Nirenberg's election, the San Antonio City Council signed a resolution on compliance with the Paris Climate Agreement after President Donald Trump announced the US would leave the agreement. In November 2017 the city council drew up a climate protection plan. In 2019, Nirenberg filed a lawsuit to remove the fast-food chain Chick-fil-A , whose corporate philosophy rejects homosexuality , from the concession agreement of the San Antonio airport. This provoked numerous negative reactions from conservative politicians. The Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton then investigated Nirenberg and the San Antonio City Council for violating Texas law and the United States Constitution. Greg Abbott signed a law in June 2019 banning local politicians from discriminating against companies based on their religious beliefs.

On January 19, 2019, Nirenberg announced that he would stand for re-election in the following mayoral election. After no majority was achieved in the first ballot, Nirenberg prevailed on June 8, 2019 with 51.1 percent of the vote against city council member Greg Brockhouse.
