Ronan John Ross O'Gara (born March 7, 1977 in San Diego , California ) is a retired Irish rugby union player who was used on the position of the liaison half. He was active for the Irish national rugby union team and the province of Munster . He was involved in the British and Irish Lions tour three times and came on two missions. Ronan O'Gara has been the head coach of the French top 14 team Atlantique Stade Rochelais since 2019 .
Life and playing career
The San Diego-born O'Gara attended school and university in Cork , Ireland , where he met his national team-mate Peter Stringer , with whom he played numerous games. He already showed his great talent in the youth selection and was allowed to play for Ireland's U21s. In 1997 he moved to the top international club Munster, for which he played until 2013. With Munster Rugby, O'Gara won six championship titles in the Pro14 .
From 2000 to 2013 Ronan O'Gara played for the Irish National Rugby Union Team and participated in the Rugby Union World Cup in 2003 , 2007 and 2011 . At the Six Nations 2009 he overtook Jonny Wilkinson as the top scorer of the traditional tournament with 17 points in the game against Scotland . At the end of the tournament, the Irish reached the second Grand Slam after 1948 , O'Gara was in the starting line-up for all games. On April 21, 2009 he was nominated by Ian McGeechan for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa .
On May 18, 2013, he ended his active career.
successes
His greatest successes include winning the Heineken Cup with Munster in 2006 and 2008 and winning the Triple Crown at the Six Nations in 2006 and 2007 , when the Irish only missed out on overall victory by defeating France each time . O'Gara holds the record for the player with the most points scored in the Heineken Cup with more than 1000 points. In the international list of the most successful players, he is 6th with 929 points in 93 international matches.
Coaching career
After his active career, O'Gara became a defensive coach at the French top 14 club Racing 92 . He worked there from 2013 to 2017 and won the French championship title with his team in 2016. From 2018 to 2019 he was an assistant coach at the New Zealand super rugby club Crusaders. There he and his team won the ninth (2018) and tenth (2019) titles in super rugby. Since 2019 he has been the head coach of the French top 14 team Atlantique Stade Rochelais .
Honors
In 2018 Ronan O'Gara was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame .
