The Roncador Reef is an atoll-like coral reef in the Malaita Province , Solomon Islands . It is 75 km south of Ontong Java Atoll , the closest landmass, and 158 km north of Santa Isabel Island . The reef rim is 14.4 km long and a maximum of 10.6 km wide, which corresponds to a total area of around 120 km². The ring-shaped reef is on average a good 600 meters wide, at the narrowest point in the south only 250 meters and at the widest point in the north about 940 meters.

The lagoon is 27 to 36 meters deep. Ships can enter the lagoon and anchor through two openings about 200 meters wide in the south of the reef. On the west side of the reef, several boulders protrude above the water. The northernmost of these boulders protrudes three meters from the water, and one about five kilometers south of it 1.8 m. In between, the reef falls dry over the entire length. There is strong surf on the east side of the reef . The reef is considered property by the chiefs of Ontong Java.

Adam Johann von Krusenstern reported in 1819 that Alvaro de Mendaña de Neyra and Francisco Antonio Mourelle discovered the reef independently of each other in the 16th and 18th centuries, the former using the name Baxo de Candelaria, the latter the name used today ( Spanish roncador means' snorer ') have given. Krusenstern attested the reef a length of 45 miles from northeast to southwest.

Through the story The pearl divers of Roncador Reef by the Australian author George Lewis Becke (1855-1913), the reef became literary.
