career

Gustafsson began playing football at Bergsundspojkarna in 1956 . In 1959, the goalkeeper moved to the youth department of AIK . In addition to soccer, he also played ice hockey for the club . At the same time he was active as a handball player for IF Rutgers and made it into the Swedish national youth team. As a handball player, he moved to the second division Umeå IK . After his military service, however, he limited himself to football.

In 1967 Gustafsson moved to Reymersholms IK . After two seasons he returned to AIK, where he guarded the goal for the first time in the Allsvenskan on April 13, 1969 in the 0-0 draw against Jönköpings Södra IF . In the 1970 season he was able to establish himself as a regular goalkeeper and by 1974 he only missed three league games. After a knee injury during the winter break in 1974/75, the previous substitute Leif Karlsson was in goal. Since Gustafsson repeatedly had problems with his knee, he could not permanently displace the competitor and after a year and a half he ended his career in the first division and returned to Reymersholms IK, where he was still active for one season. The greatest success was winning the Svenska Cup in 1976. At the height of his career in 1974, Hamburger SV invited him to a trial training session, but was ultimately not signed.

Gustafsson made two caps for Sweden in 1974 . He was part of the extended squad before the 1974 World Cup , but was not nominated for the tournament.

After the end of his active career, Gustafsson moved to the coaching bench. His first station was in 1979 at Segeltorps IF , before he was in charge of Reymersholms IK as a trainer from 1980 to 1981. From 1982 to 1986 he was responsible for Rågsveds IF .
