Rosa californica , the California hedge rose , is considered a group of closely related species. They grow wild in the western United States, from Oregon to Baja California also in dry and cold locations.

They are bushes that often form a thicket of heavily reinforced branches through "root saplings" and reach heights of up to 2 meters and then extend over several square meters. The slightly fragrant, dark pink flowers have a diameter of 4 cm and appear very rich in June and then bloom sporadically, so that flowers and rose hips can be observed on the same specimen. The rose hips are red and plump with a diameter of about 1 centimeter.
