Rosario Silva de Lapuerta

Rosario Silva de Lapuerta (born June 15, 1954 in Madrid ) is a Spanish lawyer and judge . She has been a judge at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) since October 7, 2003 and its Vice-President since October 9, 2018.

Career

Rosario Silva de Lapuerta was born on June 15, 1954 in the Spanish capital, Madrid . She studied law at the Complutense University in Madrid from 1971 and graduated in 1976 with a law degree . In 1978, after passing her examination, she was admitted to the post of public prosecutor ( Abogado del Estado ) and subsequently worked for the public prosecutor in Málaga . In 1982 she worked as a public prosecutor in the legal service of the Ministry of Transport, Tourism and Communication, and in 1984 in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs .

From 1987 to 1989 she was a public prosecutor in the Legal Service of the Kingdom of Spain for proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Communities. In 1989 she was promoted to head of the Spanish Legal Service at the European Court of Justice. At the same time, from 2000 she was Deputy Director General of the Legal Support Service for European and International Law of the Spanish Ministry of Justice .

On October 7, 2003, Rosario Silva de Lapuerta was appointed Spanish judge at the ECJ. She is also a professor of community law at the Escuela Diplomática de Madrid and co-editor of the journal “Noticias de la Unión Europea”. On October 9, 2018, the General Assembly of the ECJ judge elected Rosario Silva de Lapuerta for a three-year term as Vice-President of the European Court of Justice.
