The red sea bream or the gray bass ( Pagellus bogaraveo ) is a sea fish from the family of sea bream (Sparidae). The fish live in the western Mediterranean to Sicily and in the eastern Atlantic from Norway to Cap Blanc on the coast of Mauritania , as well as in Madeira and the Canary Islands . They are also occasionally caught off the coast of Iceland .

The red sea bream reaches a maximum length of 70 centimeters, an average length of 30 centimeters and becomes sexually mature with a length of 25 centimeters. The maximum weight is 5 kg, the maximum age is 15 years. Their body is high back, flattened on the sides, pink in color and without vertical or horizontal stripes. There is a small black spot above the base of the pectoral fin . The continuous dorsal fin is supported by 12 to 13 hard rays and 11 to 13 soft rays. The short anal fin has three spine rays and 11 to 12 soft rays. The snout is shorter than the diameter of the eye.
Way of life
The red spotted bream lives in depths of 150 to 400 (Mediterranean) or 700 (Atlantic) meters, whereby it usually stays above a depth of 300 meters. It occurs over various seabeds, especially over muddy bottoms, but also over rocky subsoil or over sandy bottoms. Young fish live near the coast. The red spotted bream is an omnivore that feeds mainly on worms, mollusks , small fish and small crustaceans . Sexually mature red bream migrate to the edges of the shelf areas to spawn from January to June . Like some other sea bream, they are proterandric hermaphrodites : after they become sexually mature as males, they develop female sexual organs with a length of 20 to 30 centimeters. The red spotted bream is an important fishing fish.
