The red peak is with a height of 2956 m above sea level. A. the second highest mountain in the Villgraten Mountains . It is located south of St. Jakob in Defereggen and east of the Austrian-Italian border.
The immediate neighboring summit east of the Rote Spitze is the somewhat higher Weißesspitze ( 2962 m ). The naming of both peaks is not clear. The view of the Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying is given here . According to the residents of the Defereggental , the mountain names are reversed, however, the red tip would then be the eastern and higher. (For naming problems and confusion between Weißer and Roter Spitze, see also the section Highest Summit in Villgraten Mountains .)
The Rote Spitze ( 2956 m , western summit of the two mentioned) can be reached both from the Defereggental - via Brugger Alm ( 1818 m ), Ragötzlalm ( 2115 m ) and G Steplenke ( 2738 m ) - and from Villgratental - via the Oberstalleralm ( 1883 m ) and Gkastenlenke - to be climbed. The last 150 meters to the summit have climbing difficulty I + . Individual places are secured here by steel cables. It's surefootedness required.
The crossing from the Red to the White Peak is very popular with climbers. The route is not marked ( climbing difficulty III- ).
