The Red Wasp Bee ( Nomada armata ) is a bee from the family of Apidae .

features

The bees are 10 to 12 millimeters long. The head and thorax of the females are black and have red markings. The tergites are red with yellow spots. The labrum is black, smooth and has a strong tooth in the middle and an unpunctured stripe at the base. The third antenna segment is almost as long as the fourth. The scutellum is spotted in red. The rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are blunt at the end and have several very short, dark thorns. The males resemble the females. Their mandibles , cheeks, calli and tegulae are yellow-red, the scutellum is black. The thighs ( femora ) of the front legs are greatly widened and concave at the bottom. The thighs of the hind legs are provided with eye-catching hair spots at the bottom. The rails of the hind legs have some bright thorns at the end.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed in southern, central and southern northern Europe. The animals fly from late May to late August. The species parasitizes Andrena hattorfiana . You can watch the animals visiting the scabiosa ( Scabiosa ) and widow flowers ( Knautia ).
