In the hereditary book of the Sonnefeld monastery from 1514, the whole place was listed as the property of the monastery.

After the death of Duke Albrecht in 1699, Roth came to Sachsen-Hildburghausen in 1705 as an exclave of the Sonnefeld office . In 1826 the office of Sonnefeld came back to Saxony-Coburg in accordance with the Hildburghausen partition agreement . On January 1, 1970, Roth am Forst was incorporated into Grub am Forst. The village is separated from Grub am Forst by the federal highway 303 .

In 2020 about 115 residents lived there. The village carried out a village renewal from 2003 to 2007. The old bakehouse was renovated and is fully functional again. The old fire station was transformed into a community center. A village square with a fountain was laid out between these buildings in the center of the village. There is also an inn with a guesthouse in the village, as well as a playground on the banks of the Füllbach .

Every year on Corpus Christi, the Comradeship Association Roth am Forst organizes a village festival.
