The Rothenbach (listed as Rothebach in the list of waters) is a 7.459 kilometer long right-hand tributary of the Ems .
River course
The Rothenbach rises on the edge of the garden street settlement in the Rietberg district of Neuenkirchen and then flows in a south-westerly direction through Druffel . There the brook is the namesake for the street “Am Rothenbach” and forms the border between the Druffel settlement focus and the nature reserve Schellenwiese . After the Rothenbach has crossed the B64, it flows in the direction of Lintel , where the Merschgraben joins the Rothenbach. The Rothenbach flows into the Ems at river kilometer 322.55.
Characteristic
The Rothenbach is a typical flatland stream with a low flow velocity, which enables swamp plants to be colonized . While the lower reaches are developed rather remote from nature, in the upper and middle reaches a stock of at least one-sided, but sometimes also both-sided, of riparian trees that are rich in old wood. In some cases, beginnings of near-natural structures can be found on the Rothenbach, but overall a more ditch-like character is predominant.
The water, which temporarily dries up when the groundwater level is low, flows through largely agricultural terrain and in the area of the Schellenwiese also affects the area of a wet meadow .
