Roustika ( Greek Ρούστικα ( n. Pl. )) Is a local community in the municipality of Nikiforos Fokas in the municipality of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete .
location
Roustika is located about 13 kilometers southwest of Rethymno at an altitude of 290 meters.
Origin of name and history
The village name could come from the Arabic name for village Roustak , or from the Latin rusticus (= rural).
The village is said to have existed before the Venetians conquered Crete . It is first mentioned as rustica during the Venetian period . The Ottoman census of 1670 recorded Christian and Muslim villagers in Rustika . In 1881 almost all of the 441 residents were Orthodox Christians.
Apart from a few minor changes, the rural community Roustika (Κοινότητα Ρουστίκων Kinotita Roustikon ) consisted of the two villages Roustika with a few small hamlets and Palelimnos from 1925 to 1997. With the implementation of the municipality reform according to the Kapodistrias program in 1997, it was merged with 13 other rural communities to form the municipality of Nikiforos Fokas, which was incorporated into the municipality of Rethymno through the administrative reform in 2010 . Since then it has had the status of a local community (Τοπική Κοινότητα).

Churches and important buildings
The Monastery Prophet Elias was founded in the mid-16th century or early 17th century. Since the first decades of the 17th century, the monastery has been renovated several times and new buildings and chapels have been added. The catholic church of the three-aisled basilica with dome is dedicated to the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada), Profitis Ilias and Agia Zoni. The present shape as well as the wall paintings of the dome and apse emerged after a renovation in the 19th century. The expansions of the monastery district to the east, west and south were added later.
Panagia Church (Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary): Two-nave church in honor of the Blessed Virgin and Christ. The interior is painted with frescoes from 1381.
Anestis and Manolis Cultural Center Anagnostakis (private collection): Manolis Anagnostakis was a poet.
