Roy Brown Ramírez (born July 18, 1945 in Orlando , Florida ) is a Puerto Rican songwriter of Nueva Trova music . He is close to the Puerto Rican independence movement .

Career

Brown studied at the University of Puerto Rico in the late 1960s , where he was active in the student movement and the movement against the Vietnam War , whose actions and demonstrations he accompanied with music. It was during this period that his first two albums, Yo protesto ("I protest") and Basta ya ... Revolución (" Enough ... Revolution!") Were created . In the following years he released further albums, u. a. the setting of poems by the poet and independence fighter Juan Antonio Corretjer .

In the late 1970s he moved to New York , where he worked with the group Aires Bucaneros and recorded two records. During this period he toured Latin America, Europe and the USA. In 1987 he recorded the album Arboles with Silvio Rodríguez in Cuba . In 1988 he returned to Puerto Rico after 13 years, where he has been living as a musician and political activist ever since, regularly recording new records. His songs often revolve around topics such as the colonization of America , anti-imperialism or social grievances.

In 1996, Colección, a preliminary retrospective of 25 years of musical activity, was published, ten years later the mostly live recorded tribute album Yo protesto: Homenaje a Roy Brown , on which he and many well-known, mostly Puerto Rican artists such as Andrés Jiménez , Zoraida Santiago , Tony Croatto by Haciendo Punto en Otro Son or Fiel a la Vega performs songs from all phases of his career.

Brown is married to former Puerto Rican tennis player Emily Viqueira and lives in Mayagüez .
