Physical Properties
Rubidium pentasulfide crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system in the space group P 2 1 2 1 2 1 (space group number 19) with the lattice parameters a = 683.7 pm, b = 1784.5 pm, c = 663.3 pm, and 4 formula units per Unit cell .
Chemical properties
When rubidium pentasulfide is heated in a stream of nitrogen , rubidium trisulfide Rb 2 S 3 , which forms red-yellow, strongly hygroscopic crystals and has a melting point of 213 ° C., is formed with the release of vaporized sulfur .
When heated in a stream of hydrogen, with the evolution of hydrogen sulfide, rubidium disulfide , Rb 2 S 2 , whose melting point is 420 ° C., is also hygroscopic and, like the trisulfide, forms a monohydrate.
