Ruby is a small town on the Yukon River in Alaska with 166 inhabitants (census in 2010). It lies on the western border of the Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge .
history
The current inhabitants of the city are Koyukon - Athabasques . These nomads lived in the area between the Nowitna River and Koyukuk River and moved around with the rhythm of the seasons. There were twelve camps in the area that were fished in the summer.
The settlement was built as a replenishment store for gold prospectors who found reddish stones on the banks of the Yukon, mistook them for rubies and thus gave the place its name.
Gold finds at Ruby Creek (1907) and Long Creek (1911) attracted hundreds of prospectors, so that sometimes over 1000 white miners lived in Ruby and the surrounding area. After a post office was established in 1912, Ruby was granted town charter the following year.
Originally, the city was ruled by gatherings of miners, which was later adopted by the pioneer Igloo Number 5 . After the gold rush , the population declined rapidly: in 1939, only 139 people lived in Ruby.
In the course of the Second World War , the prospecting activities were completely stopped, which led to the fact that almost all of the white population left Ruby. After the war ended, the remaining inhabitants of Kokrines moved to Ruby, which led to an increase in population. After the city became a second-class city in 1973 , schools and a clinic were built in the 1970s, as well as telephone and television connections in the following decade.
