The Nowitna River is a 455 km long left tributary of the Yukon River in the US state of Alaska .
Most of it is located in the Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge . The Nowitna is a calmly flowing, strongly meandering river.
Tributaries are Titna River , Big Mud River with its tributary Grand Creek , Little Mud River , Lost River and Sulatna River .
“Novi” is often given regionally as the name of the natives for the river. An expedition of the Western Union Telegraph Company in 1867 reported the name "Newicargut", where the ending "cargut" means estuary.
Since 1980, the lower 357 km of the Nowitna River has been protected as a National Wild and Scenic River .
