National Wild and Scenic River |
The Aniakchak River is a river in the Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula in southwestern Alaska .
The Aniakchak River forms the outflow of Surprise Lake , a lake in the caldera of the Mount Aniakchak volcano , flows southeast and finally flows into Aniakchak Bay on the south coast of the Alaska Peninsula .
The river breaks through the caldera wall in a gorge called "The Gates" with a gradient of 15 m / km. It follows for about 15 km of calmer water to the confluence of Hidden Creek , from where the river forms tight bends in a narrow bed for about 8 km. After that, the Aniakchak meanders through the coastal plain to the mouth at a slow flow rate.
The Aniakchak River and its four largest tributaries, Hidden Creek , Mystery Creek , Albert Johnson Creek, and North Fork Aniakchak River , were designated a National Wild and Scenic River under the administration of the National Park Service in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act .
