National Wild and Scenic River

The Mulchatna River is a 260 km long left tributary of the Nushagak River in southwest Alaska .

Its headwaters are located on Turquoise Lake in Lake Clark National Park . The Mulchatna River flows southwest and flows into the Nushagak River at Koliganek , 105 km northeast of Dillingham .

The Telaquana Trail between Telaquana Lake and Village Kijik on Lake Clark, used by the Dena'ina until the early 20th century, runs partially along the Mulchatna River. Today the trail is a backpacker trail.

The first 24 miles of the Mulchatna River within the national park was designated by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980 as a National Wild and Scenic River under the administration of the National Park Service .
