The Nushagak River is a tributary of Bristol Bay in southwest Alaska .
It rises in the Nushagak Hills , a small mountain range between Kuskokwim and Chigmit Mountains , flows southwest and flows 450 km east of Dillingham together with the Wood River into Nushagak Bay , a branch in the north of Bristol Bay.
The rivers Nuyakuk , King Salmon , Iowithla and Kokwok flow into the Nushagak. The largest tributary is the Mulchatna River . Towns along the river are Portage Creek , Ekwok , Koliganek, and New Stuyahok .
Russian explorers were the first Europeans to sail the river on expeditions into the hinterland in 1824, during which they also discovered the Kuskokwim , the Yukon and the Koyukuk .
With king salmon , silver salmon , sockeye salmon , ketal salmon and pink salmon , all five Pacific salmon species come to spawn in the Nushagak or one of its tributaries.
