The Charley River is a 140 km long left tributary of the Yukon River in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve in Alaska near the border with the Canadian Yukon Territory .
It rises in the Mertie Mountains , then flows first in a north-westerly, later in a north-easterly direction and flows 90 km northwest of Eagle into the Yukon River.
The river crosses three different topographical regions in its course. First, wide valleys in the highlands, surrounded by mountains with a height of up to 2000 m , then deeply cut river valleys between rocks and cliffs and finally open floodplains, where it meanders through the low flow of the Yukon .
According to a record by Frederick Schwatka , a lieutenant in the United States Army , from 1885, the Alaskan native name for the river was "Traodee". On an unpublished map from 1898, the river was listed as "Charlie River". In 1902, Lieutenant Cantwell of the United States Revenue Cutter Service introduced the spelling "Charley River".
The Charley River and its seven major tributaries, Copper Creek , Bonanza Creek , Hosford Creek , Derwent Creek , Flat-Orthmer Creek , Crescent Creek and Moraine Creek , km with a total length of 335 were in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act as a National Wild and Scenic River designated under the administration of the National Park Service .
