The Fortymile River ( English for "Forty Mile River") is a left tributary of the Yukon River in Alaska and the Canadian Yukon Territory .
It is formed by the confluence of the North Fork Fortymile River and South Fork Fortymile River 50 km southeast of Eagle in Alaska. From there, the Fortymile River flows about 80 km in an easterly direction and flows 40 miles downstream from Fort Reliance at the former gold rush settlement Forty Mile in the Yukon Territory in the Yukon River. The Middle Fork Fortymile River is a 130 km long right tributary of the North Fork Fortymile River, which rises 30 km east of Healy Lake in the Yukon Tanana Highlands on the watershed between the Yukon River and Tanana River .
The numerous branches of the river in the headwaters unite in the region west of the Taylor Highway . The last major tributary meets the Fortymile River north of the junction with the Top of the World Highway .
In 1980 the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act designated 630 km of river length in the catchment area of the Fortymile River in Alaska as a National Wild and Scenic River under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management .
