Chicken is a small settlement and census area in the US state of Alaska .

geography

Chicken is 100 kilometers northeast of Tok and 290 kilometers southeast of Fairbanks . At a distance of 40 kilometers to the east is the border with the Canadian Yukon Territory with the city of Dawson 100 kilometers away . The Fortymile River flows about 75 kilometers away in the northeast. By Chicken leading Alaska Route 5 , which in this area as a gravel road (English: gravel road ) and has also Taylor Highway is called. The road is closed to motor vehicles from October to April. Chicken can then be reached by snowmobiles or dog sleds .

history

Ptarmigan in Alaska

During the gold rush in the late 1800s, some gold prospectors from Dawson also prospected the area for gold. Up to 400 adventurers stayed there at times. Were used for nutritional preferably, the numerous occurring in the region Ptarmigans ( Lagopus muta ; English: Ptarmigan ). In 1902 a post office was opened and the place should be called Ptarmigan. However, because the name was complicated and difficult to pronounce, it was changed to Chicken for convenience.

Today Chicken is a popular stopover for tourists who walk in the footsteps of the historic gold rush mentality and who travel from the Yukon to Alaska. Souvenir shops , small bars and restaurants provide variety. Occasionally it is also mined in the area even after gold, some with secure troughs manually or industrially by means of draglines (engl. Dredge ).

Demographic data

In 2010 a population of seven people was determined. These are permanent residents of the place. During the summer months, a few undaunted prospectors as well as numerous tourists live on campsites and trailer parks in Chicken.
